In a world torn apart by conflicts and seemingly in need of a meaningful reset, what can an artist do to promote renewal and restoration? Art is not – and has never been – a tool designed to save lives or bring about change. But rather a means to record the human condition, offer consolation and, at best, hint at possible ways out of crises. As a multidisciplinary artist with a background in street art, I’ve come to a point in my career where I’m often less interested in making stand-alone works. As of now, I mostly create “total” installations, many of which feature diverse media.Aiming to immerse the viewer in a dramatic new setting, it’s not only gallery spaces that I transform, as most of my projects are site-specific. They result from my expeditions around the city and into the country, where I look for metaphorical and sometimes literal gray areas and cracks in the fabric of society that I can “fill in.”
For more than a decade, I’ve been exploring themes such as freedom and oppression, violence and co-existence, power and human rights. Frequently revisiting these issues in the series I produce, I’ve been also reflecting on my recent experiences as an immigrant living in a time of war. Some of my works contain written messages but it’s the universal language of art I rely on to transcend boundaries. Gradually moving away from what once was my trademark tongue-in-cheek irony, I now seek to add more layers to my artistic output and find new ways of coping with reality.
